Training

Our Two Day DFMA training class is designed to introduce the full suite of DFMA tools. The focus on the first day is the Design for Assembly methodology and software tools. The second day will explore and instruct on the different DFM topics and the integration of DFM with DFA.

Sample Training Agenda

Day One

  • Introduction to DFMA.
  • DFA questions and the minimum part criteria.
  • Sample hand calculation of a small assembly.
  • Analysis of a small assembly using DFA software.
  • Review software output.
  • Redesign analysis of the sample assembly.
  • Investigation of the Item library.
  • Investigation of the Operation library.

Day Two

  • Introduction to DFM Concurrent Costing.
  • DFM Concurrent Costing software example.
  • Using the Geometry Calculator.
  • Using CAD with DFM Concurrent Costing.
  • Investigation of the Material library.
  • Investigation of the Operation and Machine libraries.
  • Sample analyses.
  • A review of the charting and reporting options available in the software.
  • How DFM and DFA work together to develop "total cost".

Application

This is an outline of the two day on-site Application Workshop on DFMA using the Boothroyd Dewhurst software tools. This is only an outline; our experts are very flexible and can vary the agenda easily to meet your specific needs. The focus of a two day Application Workshop is on obtaining DFMA redesigns of your products using your team led by one of our DFMA experts.

Sample Agenda

Day One

  • Overview of DFMA.
  • Introduction to the Design for Assembly methodology.
  • Break.
  • Design for Assembly paper exercise of a small sample product.
  • Design for Assembly software introduction.
  • Lunch.
  • Begin Design for Assembly software analysis of your product.
  • Break
  • Complete Design for Assembly benchmark analysis of your product.

Day Two

  • Introduction to Design for Manufacture topics specific to your organization.
  • Break
  • Begin to brainstorm ideas for redesign using Design for Assembly results from the previous days analysis.
  • Lunch.
  • Begin to look at Design for Manufacture analyses of your redesigns.
  • Break.

Skills Development

As a result of these two-day DFMA classes, the user will develop the following skills:

A functional understanding of the DFA and DFM software

An understanding of the minimum part criteria in DFA

How to perform a DFA and DFM analysis.

How to use DFA to simplify product structures, reduce costs and improve product quality.

A clear understanding of the different handling and insertion difficulties.

A clear understanding of part symmetries and how they affect DFA times.

An understanding of the piece part and tooling costs generated by the software.

How the Operations, Material, and Machine libraries work and how to edit them.

How to preview and print the different charts and reports that the software generates.

How to use CAD with DFMA.

How to compare and contrast different ideas for product simplification.
