Answers to frequently asked general
questions.
This FAQ deals with queries of a general and commercial nature
regarding Design IV, BDI and DFMA. More specific queries relating
the use of the DFMA software are not covered here and should
be directed to support@dfma.com
for individual handling.
I am new to DFMA, how do I proceed?
- Check the
Getting Started page and its linked pages providing
introductory articles, case study snapshots. links to independent
articles on the internet and more.
- Request an information pack
and presentation CD to progress your interest.
- Pass the information around the company and
refer them to www.design-iv.com to
generate awareness and raise interest (further information packs
/ CDs can be supplied).
- By this point, hopefully we will have
spoken to you and can arrange an on-site demonstration (tip!
invite decision makers / budget holders).
- Following the presentation, request a
quotation for the level of implementation recommended.
- Raise and place an order for DFMA software
/ training / support
- Refer to the article "Implementation
Procedure" for guidance in the ongoing stages.
How long does it take to adopt DFMA?
There are too many variables to answer confidently
as it will be based on the level of implementation, the training
undertaken (if any), your product design time-cycle, your new
product introduction process, and your objective for adopting
DFMA in the first place. See below "What's the ROI for DFMA?".
As a guide to initial start-up, sufficient familiarity
with the methodology and software is gained within a
2-day workshop and on-going use
thereafter builds on that strong foundation.
How much does DFMA cost?
The price of DFMA software varies according to what and how many
licenses (and what type of license) you are buying. Additionally, to
consider buying or not buying DFMA software based on it's price tag
is to ignore its proven benefits - the price of DFMA is far less
than the cost of *not* doing DFMA.
For budgeting purposes only, you should expect
to invest around GBP20,000 to 40,000 (software, training, support)
in the first year depending on the level* of initial adoption. Also
check the related FAQ below on "What's the ROI for DFMA?".
*relating to the number of licenses acquired and the number of
people trained.
Why not email,
phone or fax your requirements to us? We will be more than happy to
provide a quotation.
What's the ROI for DFMA?
Typically, the return on investment (ROI) can
be achieved within the first workshop! Yes, you read correctly, the first
workshop. If you schedule a workshop using one of your current
product designs as one of the candidates for analysis by your teams
and they generate redesign ideas which are capable of being
implemented, you will invariably find that the savings forecasted
more than offset the cost of software, training AND support.
However, a word of caution - whilst many
such accelerated ROI's have been achieved, few (if any) accountants
and financial controllers believe the numbers. It is therefore
prudent to be realistic to their terms of reference and state a much
longer ROI.
Can I download a demo version?
A demo of the DFA and or DFM software is
possible via the WebEx service. Click here to visit the
DFA webpage or DFM webpage
where links to the Webex online demo's. Alternatively, we'd
be happy to mail a presentation CD to you - please visit the
contact page to make your request.
Can I get an evaluation copy of DFMA
software?
Yes, conditionally. An 14-day evaluation of
the DFMA software will be considered following a
training or application workshop. Our
reason for this prerequisite is based on experience; The DFMA
software embodies a structured procedure and methodology in
improving and quantifying a product design. Whilst the software is
intuitive and easy to use, the process and mindset needed to make it
all work is best understood and achieved through approved training.
Without such training, it is all-too easy to miss the point of DFMA
and be under-equipped to exploit the benefits that more than 500
corporations worldwide have already secured.
Can I obtain support?
Yes, so long as your software purchase was
- a) less than ninety
days ago or
- b) you are currently subscribed to our Annual
Maintenance and Support service.
You can obtain support by
telephone, fax, email or via the reserved area of
Boothroyd Dewhurst's website (registration and password
required).
What is the relationship between Design IV
and BDI?
Design IV is an official agent of BDI, set up in 1992
with the help of Boothroyd Dewhurst. Whilst Design IV is
independent, unlike typical 'agents' Design IV is totally dedicated exclusively
to DFMA hence Design IV is often viewed as "Boothroyd
Dewhurst in Europe".
I am in Europe, can I buy DFMA direct from
BDI?
Sure. Everything about the way Design IV
supplies and supports BDI DFMA is as if it were directly from BDI.
Ordinarily, BDI will refer you to contact your 'local' DFMA supplier
(i.e. Design IV) but BDI will serve you irrespective of where you
are located (subject to any export/customs regulations). Purchasing
directly from BDI does not gain any extra benefits or different
pricing (ignoring currency fluctuations and which Design IV would
equally recognise).
